Eon Labs
Organizational Proposal
Current Setup
At the moment, Eon Labs has a small team, which makes organizational structure less pressing. However, if and when the team expands, the company should have a good idea of how to organize itself to maximize efficiency. Since Eon Labs is a software research and development company, software and development should be the main focus of the structure.
Right now we have the following:

The weakness of the current setup is that it cannot scale well. Another problem is that we rely heavily on outside researchers, or individuals (James) to develop new strategies. Outside researchers are a good temporary solution, but cannot scale well in the long run for the following reasons:
- Any researcher developing a good strategy will either want to negotiate for a large percentage or go off on their own eventually.
- Outside researchers are more or less confined to working alone, as they might not want to share the secrets of their strategy, nor do we trust them with the secrets of our own. Thus, outside researches are not a durable, scalable solution, although they may be used for consulting purposes and hiring purposes. That is, a part of our researcher hiring process could include a period of independent work to evaluate their methods and skills, etc.
Proposed Setup
The following is a basic skeleton of the proposed organization. The main idea is that of separate teams pursuing their own projects while integrating with both the data science team and the risk management team.

- The key here is that researchers with many different backgrounds can work together to create a strategy, which gives them a big advantage over single outside developers. The teams may even compete in a friendly way in order to develop the best strategies, and could be financially compensated for their team’s success.
- The risk management team is essential because it is responsible for taking the various strategies that the development teams produce and integrating them into a larger portfolio strategy that balances risk with returns.
- The Data Science team can work together with all other teams in order to provide both high-quality data, as well as statistical insight and performance metrics related to the teams’ strategies.
- The exchange team’s focus is to integrate well with the various exchanges, and, in the future, perhaps build an entirely separate exchange. This could be for testing purposes (simulated exchange), or for an eventual product launch.
**Home Office vs. Working From Home **
At the moment, the company is extremely dispersed internationally. This probably stifles productivity and innovation somewhat. Even though working from home is nice, and has some advantages, this proposal argues for a hybrid structure which will require some collaborative office work in a location. However, since development teams are more or less separate, not all teams must necessarily be in the same location. For example, the Enigma team could be mostly in Vancouver, while the Market Making team is mostly in Boston, etc.
A minimum of 3 days per week in the office is likely a good balance of collaborative creative work, and individual research / work.
