Data/Applied Scientist 1st Interview Questions

The main focus is to assess communication skills and determine cultural fit. At the end of the interview, we will assign a technical take-home test. We expect the candidate to spend up to 3 working days (24 hours in total) on it and submit their answers within 7 days.

Tell me about yourself and your professional background.

This question aims to understand the candidate’s professional journey, key experiences, and how their background aligns with the role.

Tell me about a challenging project you worked on and how you overcame obstacles.

This question assesses the candidate’s problem-solving abilities, resilience, and creativity in overcoming difficulties and achieving project goals.

What motivates you to perform your best at work?

This question aims to understand the candidate’s intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, providing insights into their work ethic and what drives their performance.

How do you stay current with the latest developments and trends in data science?

This question aims to see if the candidate truly enjoys data science and follows the latest trends and directions in the field.

Have you published any papers? If so, how many are conference papers and how many are journal papers?

This question is designed to evaluate the candidate’s research output, their experience in disseminating their work, and their contributions to their field through publications.

Why do you want to work for a startup rather than a more established company?

This question aims to uncover the candidate’s motivations and preferences for a startup environment, helping them understand the advantages and opportunities our startup presents, such as a bigger impact, fewer office politics, and financial incentives through our trading system.

Where do you see yourself in the next 2-3 years, and how does this role align with your career goals?

This question seeks to determine the candidate’s career aspirations, their long-term commitment to the role, and how the position fits into their overall career trajectory.

Do you have a valid working visa in Canada?

We can sponsor the candidate through LMIA if they do not have a valid visa, but it would take approximately 6 months for them to obtain it based on our previous experience. We would prefer them to start work as early as August 1st or September 1st. In that case, we can pay them through crypto before they obtain the visa.
