Qualitative-quantitative balance
When combined, qualitative and quantitative research methods have the potential to either uncover issues in the early stages of a project or program that can then be further investigated using quantitative research methods, or quantitative research methods have the potential to highlight particular issues that can then be examined in greater depth using qualitative research methods.
Theory‐driven & data mining balance
We often process given big datasets step by step to generate relational insights and predictions. This has implications for how research is conducted: Instead of beginning with theory or with limited samples of data that need to be evaluated by humans, research may begin with the analysis of enormous amounts of data in order to arrive at findings that are driven by the data itself.
